Chitosan-Enriched 3D Matrix Reduces Inflammatory Mediators in Human Chondrocytes

Oprenyeszk F, Sanchez C, Dubuc JE, Maquet V, Henrist C, Compère P, Henrotin Y. Chitosan-enriched three-dimensional matrix reduces inflammatory and catabolic mediators production by human chondrocytes. PLoS One. 2015;10:e0128362. doi: 10.1371/journal.pone.0128362

This in vitro study examined the effects of chitosan-alginate beads on human osteoarthritic chondrocytes over 28 days. Findings revealed that chitosan-alginate beads significantly decreased the production of inflammatory mediators such as interleukins-6 and -8, prostaglandin E₂, and matrix metalloproteinase-3. Additionally, there was a trend toward increased synthesis of cartilage matrix components like hyaluronan and aggrecan. These results suggest that chitosan-alginate scaffolds may be beneficial for cartilage repair by modulating inflammatory responses and promoting matrix production.
