Breath Volatile Metabolome Highlights Chitin-Glucan’s Impact on Gut Microbiota

Neyrinck AM, Rodriguez J, Le Roy T, Pachikian BD, Cani PD, Bindels LB, Delzenne NM. Breath volatile metabolome reveals the impact of dietary fibres on the gut microbiota: Proof of concept in healthy volunteers. eBioMedicine. 2022;80:104051. doi: 10.1016/j.ebiom.2022.104051.

This study explores how dietary fibers, specifically chitin-glucan (4.5 g/day), influence gut microbiota and metabolism. Breath analysis in healthy volunteers revealed shifts in volatile compounds, linked to butyrate-producing bacteria like Faecalibacterium. Chitin-glucan modulated breath profiles without affecting digestive comfort, positioning breath analysis as a non-invasive tool to assess dietary fiber effects on gut health.
