Breath Volatile Compounds and Conjugated Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids as Metabolic Biomarkers Reflecting the Interaction Between Chitin-Glucan and the Gut Microbiota

Rodriguez J, Neyrinck AM, Nazare J, Cani PD, Bindels LB, Delzenne NM. Breath volatile compounds and conjugated polyunsaturated fatty acids as metabolic biomarkers reflecting the interaction between chitin-glucan and the gut microbiota. Proc Nutr Soc. 2020;79(OCE2):E499. doi: 10.1017/S0029665120004474.

This study investigates how chitin-glucan supplementation influences the production of breath volatile compounds and conjugated polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) through its interaction with the gut microbiota. Findings suggest that chitin-glucan modulates microbial activity, leading to distinct metabolic biomarkers detectable via non-invasive breath analysis. These results highlight the potential of using breath volatile compounds and conjugated PUFAs as indicators of gut microbiota responses to dietary interventions.
